Craniosacral Treatment

Craniosacral therapy (CST), or cranial sacral therapy is an alternative therapy that focuses on the rhythm of cerebrospinal in the body. This rhythm is six to twelve cycles per minute. The cranium bones normally have subtle movements which expand and contract as the cerebral spinal fluid flows around the brain, spinal cord and sacrum. When movement in the cranium is available, the cerebral spinal fluid flows freely, promoting a balanced and self-healing environment for the body. Craniosacral therapists are trained to detect disturbances in the rhythms and use gentle movements to free up the restrictions. The practitioner uses gentle therapeutic touch to manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium. CST can also be applied to other parts of the body, like the face, spine, arms, pelvis, soft tissue and feet.

Craniosacral therapy was developed by John Upledger, D.O. in the 1970s, and is loosely based on osteopathy in the cranial field (OCF), which was developed in the 1930s by William Garner Sutherland.

Patients remained clothed during a treatment and treatments generally are one hour long. Treatment is easiest if the patient is lying down on a massage table, where there is full access to the head.
